Facebook, Twitter harmful in every way!

By Olaitan Okusaga

Social Networking is Ironical in its name because it doesn’t bring people closer but creates big gaps in relationships with people who really matter the most in our life Parents and Family. Spending lumps of time sitting in front of computer screen is not going to get you friends but living with them sharing happiness and spreading the joy does that. Facebook, Twitter etc. are good but not better!

The rift sometimes expands and can’t be solved with any efforts. There are many side-effects of staying stuck to social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter etc. and five most Deadly side-effects follow this paragraph.

 Facebook can cause trouble because…

It can degrade school Performance

A research conducted in United States over several children proved that students who use Facebook, Twitter and other social networking websites excessively had a low attention span and thus score low grades. Facebook should be used constructively but not like elixir without which you can’t survive. Addiction to anything is bad, Facebook is addictive.

It can get you “fired”

Take me lightly, play some Farmville or Texas Hold ‘em Poker in the office and you will see the result. A pink slip despite of a promotion.  I know how badly you miss your relatives… i know… but during work Facebook should be avoided.
Recently, a research revealed that a more than 72% employees in every company spent 1-1.5 hours on Facebook, Twitter and other Social Networks during work.

It is bad manner to not show up
Just saying “Happy Birthday” or “Happy Marriage Anniversary” is not enough, being present with family and friends during rough conditions matters more than anything else. You might disagree but Facebook is depriving you of society and social bonding. It may seem fun but is addictive and thus ought to be used in limit.

It is unhealthy to stay up all night long

Facebook is not the right place to seek new friends that could be there for you when you need them, yes it develops connection but not the one which we need, therefore communication with real people who live in your locality, study at coaching and work in following cubicles is much more important. Leaving living God’s biggest gift for internet is not at all a good idea or decision. I think we should limit access to Facebook rather than saying that stop Facebook or “never ever use it”.

An example is one of my sisters. She loves Facebook so much that no one can ever detach her from it. Even my mum had to seize her laptop for a whole year cause of Facebook. She neither eats nor sleeps except stay on Facebook all night long. All this makes me wonder how she graduates from middle school.

It’s Dangerous to show everything!
It is good if you want to share all your data, you birthday and latest pictures with strangers, but what if…? Do you know what you are risking? … Yeah i know that Facebook has privacy setting but when hackers can get your account password in a moment how long do you think it would take them to break security? What if… by fate your name spoils on the web for something you have no idea about, it sounds crazy but you never know.

Final Conclusion:
I have no right to tell you what to do and what not to do, i can just say… as a friend that Social Networking Websites are great, Facebook is ultimate and Twitter is like your virtual world but excess of everything is bad! I don’t use it like mad men! I remember a time when i was playing more than 17 social games including Farmville and update my status even at 4 in the morning. Life is to live there are thousands of things waiting for us in the real world.

  1. Great post. I definely have to agree with you on that. Facebook is not private. In fact, sometimes when you apply for schools and jobs, they can find your facebook and pictures. I deleted minebecause I didn't feel safe on there. Besides, who cares what everyone is doing every 5 minutes ?

  2. This post hit it home! Last semester I found that I had to discipline myself to only log onto to Facebook once, maybe twice a day. VERY addictive! These social networking sites make it so convenient to simply sync your smart phone with Facebook. It's as easy as tapping an icon on your touchscreen and you have the world at your finger tips, so to speak.
I have a 10 year old cousin with a Facebook account. At 10 years old I was more worried about running around until the street lights came on. It makes me worry about the generations to come. What effect will the ever-changing American culture have on me raising my children? The internet is a whole different "animal."

  3. I like this post. I am an addicted Facebook fan altho im not on the site as much as i used to be. I can remember a few months ago sitting at my computer for hours and hours playing all the game apps and sending game requests.
Since I have become a student, facebook has become more of a burden and playing the games no longer give me enjoyment.
I still update my stats because FB has become more like my on-line journal, I enjoy keeping up with my family and friends, and really where else in the world can u find out about a party, wedding or event so quickly?
FB is not for everybody, but can be enjoyed safely by setting your privacy settings, limiting your online time, and trusting no one!

  4. Social Networking especially Facebook is one of the bad thing for today`s generation and if it continues like this, it will be more dangerous for the next generation. People say that Facebook connects us with our friends and relatives; I am not saying that this is not true but before the existence of Facebook people were connected with their friends and relatives. They were even more connected with each others then they are today with Facebook. I, personally don`t have Facebook but all my friends have Facebook. My best friend spends all her free time on Facebook. We even don`t have time to go out like we use to do before. Social networking is destroying face to face socialization. I think that social networking is more bad then good for our society.

  5. It is hard to say whether social networking is good or bad. Too much of any good thing could be considered harmful, I think it just depends on the person. For the most part people are still going out, hanging with their friends and family. nobody that I know is even using a computer to check their facebook. Social networking seems to me to be the most effective way to show off. Show where you have been, who you know or what you are doing. Its something to check out when you are bored or waiting. Nobody is homeless or dying because of facebook , it is not that big of deal.

Thanks guys for all your comments. The rate at which people get addicted to social media nowadays really give me a real concerns cos by now if people cant control themselves now I wonder what will happen in the future when I know something better and more addictive is introduce cos surely this is not the end of the world. GOD help us all.

  7. This is a good blog post I totally agree on the the fact that "It can degrade school Performance" because once I got my first touchscreen phone with internet I couldnt keep myself off facebook or myspace. These social networks are extreamly addictive as a matter of fact I have twitter up on my second tab so I wont miss the bet of my tweet flow and the trendy topic. But I beg to differ on the fact that it can give u a low attention span and make u suffer in grades. These schools and educational institutions should take some of the blame of even letting the kids or adult sit in the classroom and get on these social networks. And to if the class is boring the person is going to find something to do regredless whether its get on a social network or not.

  8. I think you made valid points of how addicting facebok and other social networks can be. I think every person is different though. Like you said too much of anything is bad for you, but not everyone uses these social networks this way. Personally, I like to use my facebook to keep up with family and old friends, some who live far.

  9. Socail network can be a waste of time. Who would want to let the world know their every move? It can be good to follow up with friends that you have not seen in a long time , but don't bring your personal world with your "network" world. People just love the attention and the high status that they get from people that do not matter at the end of the day.

  10. Really, social networking sites aren't good or bad in of themselves. In the last paragraph you stated that anything in excess is bad but the bulk of the article stated pretty plainly that social networking is a bad thing. I'm sure if you crunched the numbers you'd find that people that use Facebook or Twitter or anything else can be spread pretty evenly between people that flop and people that succeed-- which leads me to conclude that social networking has no net effect on performance on average.

  11. Social networking sites are definitely positive and negative. I remember when i was in high school and the school blocked the site on our computers. It actually took a lot longer than i thought. But it wasn't just because of the students going online during class but teachers! I thought that was pretty crazy. It was probably more for the teachers punishment than the students i feel. I do think it can help in emergencies though. Like if you need to contact a friend. Sometimes their phone number is on the profile or you can message them.

  12. I agree with many of the points in this post. Social networking certainly has its downside and can be a huge time waster. The post seems to have a lot of assumptions about this, and I would have liked to see a balance with how people use the media constructively. For instance how people can find old friends they otherwise would never see again, or be made aware of important social issues. Nothing is ever wholly bad or good- people's attitudes and personal conduct make the difference.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I also agree that it helps keep in contact with old friends. especially if they have moved, went a far distance for college, or just simply lost contact with someone.

  14. Even though social networks are for meeting people and connecting with old mates among other things, people have totally misused the sites. You can see young girls posting their nude pictures and other ones cursing their family out and totally disrespecting the values family is meant to hold in one's life because they feel it's the new thing to do and it's so cool also it's has turned to a place where you can just update your whole life on and you feel it's okay. So many people have been so addicted to it that it has impacted their lives in all ways. It's good to be involved in new things and move along with the world but too much of anything is bad.

  15. I kinda agree with this post because i have found myself on face book for the past month just playing the games. For hours I would be there playing knowing I have other things to do. But these social networks also are there to keep in touch with people you haven't seen are heard from in years. People just have to know how to control there self while online.

  16. I am not in full agreement with everything in this post. Just because children with low attention spans use social network it does not mean that the social networks are the cause of their disorder,b Using social networks can actually be an effect of their short attention spans, not the other way around. You said "I know how badly you miss your relatives" it seemed like you were implying that SN (social networking) takes people away from their loved ones. In actuality I believe that it brings them together. There have been a number of instances where long lost friends and relatives have reunited by finding one another on Facebook or other sites. In the other paragraph where you talked about being present instead of sending a happy birthday message I found some problem in that. Being present is import but for people over long distances a simple "happy Birthday comment" means a lot when the other person is hundreds of miles away. I believe that SN is perfect for people who feel socially awkward or who Do not have a strong social life. Becoming friends with someone without having to be close could be a good thing. However I do agree with you when you said "Don't show everything". It can be dangerous to meet people over the internet and share personal information. As long as the information you are sharing is limited then you are in the clear.
