Breaking A Social Norm

By: Dominique Kidd
Social norms are unwritten known rules in society, which is somewhat learned behavior in our everyday life. An example of a social norm is wearing clothing outside or standing in line at the bank. Here is an example of some sociology students breaking a social norm.
This video was about how a group of sociology students did a project on breaking a social norm. And the end result was that cheering people on while working made them happy, but when I did that same experiment it didn’t work out that good for me. The cashier thought I was being really rude to her, and then when I told her that it was for a sociology project she was really mad. She told me I was rubbing it in her that I am in school, and I shouldn’t do that because I don’t know everyone’s situations.
In conclusion I believe social norms are important in everyday situations because even though there are unwritten rules they are basically common sense.

  2. Some peoples social norm is being rude & confrontational. Video was great. Good for you for trying out your social experiment Dominique!

To some people all they know is how to be rude because that is all that they know im sorry to say. Being nice and polite is really hard for some people and when you are other people think that you are up to something. Very good work in bringing that to our attention!

  4. Its great you were brave enough to actually do the the experiment! For the cashier to say those things were a little crtazy to me because i dont see how you were smashing anything in her face, maybe her day was so messed up your cheering just couldnt make her happy. The video you used was great.

Dominique, this was a good idea to show as an example of breaking the norm. I like the fact that you filmed it because we get to see peoples reactions. You did a good job. About the cashier who reacted the way she did,her behavior was kind of unexpected after you had told her it was for a project but everyone has their own opinions and we can't change them.

  6. Great job Kandace you took this assignment and made it so much fun. I worked with the public for 5 years and if I had a customers who were as delightful and funny as you and your team I probably would still be working for that company. As for that cashier I think she had other issue going on with her. I loved this social norm pieces.

  7. Wow, that was great. At first I thought you guys were having fun with it, especially at the Target store. But when you were in the ice cream store and the cashier was embarrassed and felt like you were teasing her I felt a little bad for her. I think maybe you gave her more than she bargained for that day. It's funny how she took it so personal and even more so after you told her it was for school. I think you did a great job and raised other issues about our society. It gave me something to think about. Even though your project was about breaking a social norm it made me think about how we veiw our own social status: good, bad or indifferent. (And your lucky it was an ice cream parlor and you could see what she was doing to your food, something else to think about.)

  8. I think you did what you set out to do, you wanted to break a social norm and you did just that. We can't predict how anyone will respond at any given time. You could have said hello, and she may have found something condescending in your hello. I believe she may have some underlying or subconscious issues with not going to school. No, we never know what someone else may sruggle with or what happened to make them feel and react the way the do, but its impossible to know everyone's plight. i think you did a good job, and I agee with the previous comment; thank goodness you could see if you were getting any extra toppings... LETS GO DOMINIQUE!! LETS GO DOMINIQUE!! :)
