The Socialization Process in College for an Adult

By: Uliser Galdamez Corkery

The process that socialization takes in life courses, are childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and aging.  I think that somewhere in between adolescence and adulthood should be added another process of life, college. For many people college is not an option until they realize, without the knowledge of a technical school or college, establishing a future, and becoming an adult will be hard for them. Ones adolescence finish or drop out of high school, many of them do not continue school due to responsibilities they add in their daily lives.    Adult learners face unique challenges work, family, and the numerous responsibilities and obligations that they must juggle while pursuing a degree.
This video shows an example of how an adult decides to go back to school due to her brother being convicted of a murder he didn’t commit.  Betty AnneWaters is a single mother of two children and works a full time job and decides to go to school to prove that her brother is innocent. Her first step is to get GED and was accepted to law school whish would help her succeed in her goal. This story is based on a true event that demonstrates socialization that college is a great example that be added to the life course of society.
I relate to this video because I’m 27 years old and like many adults I struggled through life because of not having college education. I started out two years ago by attending twilight school and accomplishing my high school diploma. Now, I’m in college and moving towards accomplishing my goals. The reason why I’m in college is so that I can be an example for my children and for my family. It was hard to adapt to this environment due to my responsibilities with my two children and having to work a full time job. At the end, I know this will pay off but meanwhile I have to stick to a time schedule that will help me pursue my goals. College is an example of socialization due to the fact that one has to create a bond and relationships with professors and classmates.
In conclusion, socialization is the process through which people learn the expectations of society. Like many adults, I learned how to adapt and manage my life changes. Socialization is a learning process that everyone goes through to learn and consider new things. Having the support of peers and family is an important source of strong self esteem.  Everyone goes through the learning experience by making mistakes and learning from them. Betty Anne Waters, from the movie Conviction is a great example of how adults take a big step in changing their life course by attending college and becoming a supportive adult.

Uliser, you clearly explain what socialization is and you demonstrate to us the readers a great example. I really like your example for your explanation of socialization; I would have neer thought of this! MARVELOUS! I'm glad that you realized how important education is and that your back in school. It will pay off some day and until then, keep striving for what you want to accomplish in your life. It's never too late!

  2. I can relate to this video in a way. I don't have children, but I decided not to go to college right out of high-school. I decided to go to work instead. After 15yrs of working I finally decided to go to college and get my degree. I face two challenges with this decision: 1.) I would probably be older than the other students, 2.) I work overnight so I would be extremely tired while doing this. However, with a strong determination to better my life and the support of my family I am overcoming these obstacles and getting my degree. I have also found that I am not the only adult to have made this decision. There are a lot of us in college.

It shouldnt be surprising that more and more adults are attending colledge as of late, with the way the economy is today, even people with degrees are having hard times getting jobs and are also being laid off. It is good in a sense that more and more people are truely motivated to better themselves, just as in the clip-she found somthing important enough to further her education to overcome an obstacle!
