What is deviance?

By:Hai Hu
What is deviance? Deviance is behavior that recognized as violating expected rules and norms. For example, in the United States, being late for class is a deviant act: the same is true of wearing jeans to a formal wedding. But why do people violate norms? May be people doing that for fun, some people even don't know the acting they did is a deviant behavior. For many people, the word deviance is used only in relation to moral or political norms. The deviant is seen as someone whose behavior totally different from normal standards.

Zach Weber and Josh Rehak are college students. One day, they put a box on their face as a mask, and then they went and playing around in a crowded supermarket. They said "we just try to do something that is extremely special, and it is funny!" Obviously, what Zach and Josh did is a deviant behavior. However, the purpose they violated the norm was for fun.

According to functionalists, deviance is a common part of human existence, with ether positive or negative consequences in society. I think deviance helps to define the limits of proper behavior. Children who see one parent scold the other for climbing at the dinner table learn about approved conduct. The same is true of the cashier who is fired for yelling at a customer.

In conclusion it is a true that we can find lots of people that act in deviance, and the deviant behavior could cause a positive or negative consequence. Sometimes people acting deviant with no reason, but deviance behavior still deeply affect our social life. So sociologists and students should pay attention on learning and studying deviance.

  1. Deviance is not just a bad behavior It can also be a good behavior too. Like Martin Luther King Jr.

  2. I agree with what you’re saying about deviance that it has a positive and negative consequence in society. Deviance doesn’t have to be all bad for example, in your second video there was a picture of a group of fireman and a picture of Martin Luther King Jr. The negative deviance was a picture of the KKK and a picture of a prostitute.

  3. Only the society in which you live in determine your behavior as deviance,so we do not need to study devaince.

  4. I really enjoyed your videos. They gave very different examples of deviance. The first one being funny and the second one with more serious examples. I liked the second video because it showed forms of deviance that were poitive and negative but also some that were people's self expresion. It is interesting to think that piercings, tattoos, and ways of dress are deviance from society but at the same time is a reflection on how someone feels. So it is looked at as wrong by society and right by the individual.

I really liked how the second video broke deviance down into different categories, showing examples of positive, negative, bizarre, seen everywhere, in media, in politics, and everyday life-such a variety. It helped enforce that not all deviance is bad. I especially loved the no smoking sign with the smoker and the pregant teens, good thing they weren't the ones smoking.

I also agree that deviance can also be good because sometime you do something to know the respond of people that are passing by. Some people don't want to be burder and they just walkaway without saying or asking if something is wrong and need help.

  7. I like this blog. I guess from watching the videos I thought of myself. I do alot in life that may be looked at as deviant. For example, I dont believe in marraige. My family thinks thats deviant. I also like to dress younger than what my age is... my family thinks thats crazy and I need to grow up. My ex- boyfreind thinks I look crazy because the way I wear my hair. He says "look around nobody wares their hair that way". I say, "and this is why you are my ex" Why do I have to do what society says is the right thing to do, that this is whats normal! Says who? I'm an indiviual and sometimes its fun to break the rules. I like to be me, to be different, why conform? Because society says so. "Not I says the cat." Live a little, nobody is going to remember you for being normal one. I say, sometimes being deviant is cool.

  8. Its a quite thought provoking topic that what is deviance? In actual, deviance has different meanings in different social settings and conditions. Also it has different approach for different people. If there is some thing deviant for one person then it is not necessary that it would be deviant for the other. Mostly people like to act out of routine or way against normal for the sake of fun or excitement, but there is one thing that deviance is a necessary part of our life. Imagine if we have nothing to do exciting or different from our routine then how boring the life become.

  9. I enjoyed your videos, especially the second one, because it showed such a variety of examples of deviance. I agree that deviance is an integral part of society, but does it always need to have a positive or negative effect on society, or could it play a more a neutral part. I see this in some of the examples in the video such as the kids with mohawks and someone smoking near a no-smoking sign.
